CORVINUS UNIVERSITY OF BUDAPEST (CUB)
MASTER OF ARTS IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Information on the application procedure for Academic Year 2020/2022

(For foreign applicants!)

OUTLINE OF THE PROGRAM

CUB's Master of Arts in International Relations is a two-year English-language program training future specialists of regional and international affairs with a comprehensive understanding of world politics and international relations. It is ideal preparation for those who wish to pursue a career in public administration, international institutions, NGOs or multinational companies based or operating within Central and Eastern Europe, but it does provide a more global outlook at the same time.

The program is hosted by CUB's Institute of International Studies where students have the opportunity to choose from a selection of area specialist as well as language courses to build up a useful portfolio. In addition, the program has a multidisciplinary scope with strong IR, international legal and world economics dimensions. A solid background in the social sciences and a variety of generalist courses, such as Theories of International Relations and Comparative Foreign Policy, are offered, as well as a focus on European Union affairs and Central and Eastern Europe's interaction with the wider context of world politics and the global economy. The emphasis is on training students empowered with the analytical (interpretive, critical thinking and problem-solving) skills that enable them to use knowledge for practical purposes.

CUB's campus, sitting along the banks of the river Danube, offers a venue for the program well-suited to cater to students' needs. Our location in downtown Budapest, in the heart of Central Europe, may offer prospective graduates the opportunity to sufficiently get acquainted with and build a professional network within the region during their studies at the leading Hungarian institution in the field of International Relations.

The program is fully in English.

Applicants have to submit an original essay of 2,000 to 4,000 words by e-mail, on either of the following topics (the choice of the candidate in this case is optional):

  • Analyse the prospects of Sino-US relations with a view to trade and security issues.
  • Assess the present trends and the future of NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Applicants are invited to consider either (but only one) of these two subjects from an original angle. The focus of the essay should be to argue in favour of a central thesis, and to submit appropriately referenced evidence in support of this thesis.

Please send your essay in an attachment to your message to both of the following two e-mail addresses, while in addition also sending a print copy of it together with the application package: to Dr. Péter Marton at peter.marton@uni-corvinus.hu and to Nikolett Menyhárt at nikolett.menyhart@uni-corvinus.hu.

In the subject line, please make sure to include: "Application: Corvinus Master of Arts in IR - Essay submission." Also, please make sure to include your full name and your contact details (e-mail and phone number) on the cover page of your essay.

Beyond the essay submission, although there is no oral entrance examination for the program, the Admissions Board may contact any applicant for a personal interview. Preliminary decisions will be made - and communicated to the applicants – not later than 30th June 2020. Personal interviews are then to be expected during the course of June.
